You put a drawing or some sort of piece of paper on a printer thing, then it scans the image onto your computer as a picture.

Will someone tell me what a scanner is?

You take a picture or peice of paper or something and place it onto the scanner. The scanner literally reads the paper in a code called bitmap (Not quite sure on this, need confirmation) and then it'll post the results of the reading (or scanning) onto your computer. So its like the opposite of prining, in its most basic form.
