Hello all,Being shocked by all of the misfortunes in Japan, and hearing the word "Chernobyl" so many times, I just had to watch a documentary on youtube. I must say, it is one of the most dipressing things I have ever watched. To make a very long and painful story short, Chernobly's plant exploaded causing radiation to skyrocket. Russia didnt tell its people which caused many deaths. They also sent in people to clean up the mess. Even they were unaware of the danger. Here's the long version. I suggest reading it. It's a good lesson on why nuclear energy is more bad than goodScientists in Chernobyl were conducting a new experement on the power plants to save energy. Sadly, the plant (#4) exploded, causing a worse explosion than an atom bomb. People close to the area had NO idea what was going on due to the lack of communication between Russia and its people. As the huge cloud of smoke from the fire contaminated the cloud, much of the radiation leaked. That cloud travled all across Europe causing many many deaths and injurys. Before that, back to when it first exploaded, the next day, soldiers (I believe it was soldiers..) told people to evacuate into busses, leaving everything they had behind. Still, no one knew the situation. After cleaning everyone up, people still got sick, and the problem expanded. The lava leaking from the plant was threatening to burn thru the cement that seperates the lava from a patch of water. If the 2 met, it could cause an even greater explosion than before, making most if not all Europe inanhabitable. Draining the water from its patch under the cement, time was bought, but not for long. They had to fill that patch with cement. Miners, unaware of the danger (not being told) dug a deep tunel down to the patch. They then filled it with cement. Months later, many workers died, and more were badly hurt from the radiation. Now, more men went into the abandoned plant, trying to find out how to stop all this radiation. They found out that the area were the explosion happened was unbelieveably radioactive and they had to stop it soon. Workers had to use robots (the workers were a safe distance away from the plant) to get rid of the debre on the roof where this big sarcofigus would be build, so some radioactivity would be demolished. After a while in the radiation, the machienes exploded, and people had to finish the job. The debre on the roof was so highly radioactive, the workers had to dress in many many many layers. After that job, even more workers died, as well as were injured. As they put the sarcofigus on the plant, the radioactivity slowed down and Europe was no longer at risk... for now...Today, Chernobly is extreamly radioactive and is uninhabitable. Even with the sarcofigus, radioactivity leaks much from it. The plant is becoming old and worn out. We will have to replace it soon or more catastrophy will strike.I know this happened a while ago, but I feel as though I had to have a discussion on this.
