I really like the Japanese version but I thought it weird that even though it was in Japanese they were playing American football.

Then treat it as Rugby.

In Rugby the ball is round and you don't wear almost bullet proof armor.

GI seems to aim at American market and the people who draw the anime are just too lazy to draw that scene again replaced with playing baseball or soccer.
